Good morning, baseball fans! There’s a lot to cover this morning, so I’ll keep the intro short and just announce that James Loeffler has joined the Frontier League Journal family and will be going to Frontier League games in order to offer original photographs for our audience.

I talked to James last week and the guy is a passionate baseball fan, very respectful and just a great guy overall. Please follow him on his Instagram page, James’ Mancave.

He’ll be in New York on May 27 and we’re working on getting him in Sussex County on May 28.

First Lineups

Friday marked the first time we could see Frontier League lineups in the last 600 days! Imagine that. A lot of exhibition games are available for fans around the league, sometimes for free. Be sure to follow the teams on their respective social media platforms for all the info / action. Here are the lineups from the Southern Illinois Miners and Evansville Otters, from yesterday:

• Craig Massey hits a double and a single for 4 RBIs in Game 1.
• Luke Mangieri crushed a two-run bomb.
• Jarrod Watkins has a solo shot and a double, good for 3 RBIs.
• Chase Cunningham pitches 4 innings and records 6 Ks.

Press Review

With the season upon us, more articles are being written about the league by local newspapers / media and I’ll make a point of sharing content. The more we know, the more we can enjoy the game and the Frontier League, wouldn’t you agree.

Wild Things in Camp

• Chris Dugan has been doing his thing with the Observer-Reporter a long time and he has a piece in today’s paper about Washington Wild Things outfielder Bralin Jackson. At the end of his piece, he has some info about the WT’s exhibitions games and this nugget from the new manager, Tom Vaeth.

“I’m evaluating what I see in game situations,” Vaeth said. “I’ve seen guys have terrible camp days and then go out and have three hits in a game situation. I’ve also had guys who look great in batting practice and you wonder why they’re here (independent baseball) and then, in a game, they look like they can’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.”

Get to know the Jackals

• Brooks Carey, the New Jersey Jackals’ manager, highlighted four players that could have a huge impact in 2021 and added a reason why:

Alfredo Marte — Outfielder

“The New Jersey Jackals are thrilled to welcome Alfredo and his family back this season. His MVP of the league tells you all you need to know about his many talents. He’s a class act and a great teammate that all his teammates look up to.”

Dylan Brammer — Closing Pitcher

“His move to the bullpen and eventually the closer role was obviously a key to us winning the championship. During a playoff run you need certain guys to step and welcome the challenge. And that’s what he did. We simply don’t win without him.“

Reece Karalus — Pitcher

“His performance in Game 5 of the first round of playoffs was as good as you’ll see. 4 innings, 0 hits, 0 BB and 9 SO against a great lineup. Anything less and we don’t see the finals. He and Brammer at the back end of the bullpen gives our team a lot of confidence.“

Santiago Chirino — Infielder

“Chi-Chi is a model of consistency. Having missed every trip to Canada and still put up the numbers he did is remarkable. He’s been an all-star every year and we’re confident he will be again.

David Glaude after the Trade from Trois-Rivières to Québec

David Glaude is a talented and beloved player in Québec and he was part of a big trade in 2019 that saw him go from the Aigles to the Capitales. He talked to Carl Tardif and this article appears in today’s edition of the Le Soleil (french):

Involved in one of the most important transactions between the Aigles de Trois-Rivières and the Capitals of Quebec in November 2019, David Glaude still cannot cut ties with his former team and become a full member of his new, merger of a summer obliges!

“It’s not this summer that I’m going to get booed in Trois-Rivières,” laughs the second baseman who has played three seasons with the Aigles. He will therefore wear the Team Québec cap instead of that of the Capitales in 2021.

Glaude was on the bus bringing the Quebec players to New York state on Friday in preparation for the opening of training camp on Saturday. He did so with the hope of returning to play in Quebec City and Trois-Rivières in July and August, but also with the specter of spending the whole summer in the United States.

“When the news came out that we could play all season there, my girlfriend told me, I hope you go. We don’t have kids, she teaches elementary school, I still have a year to finish my studies, I’m going to spend my summer playing baseball and I’m leaving with peace of mind. If I don’t come back, Noémie [Gauthier] could come and see me there and she will have the house to herself to do quarantine… ”, noted the future land surveyor.

Gateway Grizzlies

May 14: Signed INF Abdiel Alicia Diaz. He was picked in the draft on Tuesday, but no info is available to me on him. I contacted his manager, Cameron Roth, so let’s see the scouting report he provides, I’ll keep you updated.

Joliet Slammers

May 14: Signed catcher Tyler Baum, one of their pick in the draft. Here’s what I wrote on him the next day:

I’m very interested in this right-handed batter from the Virginia-Wise Cavalier. Look at his offensive stats in the NCAA (5 seasons): .330/.395/.454. If he can handle the catching duties, he could be a nice backup / pinch hitter / 1B behind Brian Parreira.

May 14: Signed RHP Brad VanAsdlen, a 6–4, 220 lbs from Minnoka, Illinois, who hasn’t yet played pro ball. Not that much info available, but expect him to be a reliever if he breaks out of camp with the team. Here are the stats at Palm Beach Atlantic University and also a recruiting video (2017). Unless his arsenal has changed since 2017, he throws a fastball, curveball, splitter and a change up:

May 14: Released OF Orynn Veillon.

Schaumburg Boomers

May 14: Signed RHP Ryan Middendorf and LHP Jesse Remington. Two draftees from Tuesday and my long report about them can be found by following this link.

As I mentioned in that article, the Boomers were one of honorable mentions in that event, because their rotation needed a boost and they might have two very interesting arms to work with. Good job, Boomers.

Southern Illinois Miners

May 14: Signed RHP Wes Noble, RHP Kaleb Schmidt, and catcher Fernando Villegas.

Équipe Québec

May 13: Signed catcher Jorge Garcia. I hesitate to talk about him, since I’m not sure I have the profile while doing my research. The one I’m leaning toward points to a former 1B/DH from California State University and played two games behind the plate in 2017. He can hit the hell out of the baseball, but that was against lower competition so let’s not get too excited and wait for more info or his development in camp.

May 13: Signed catcher Miguel Molina, a second round pick of the New York Boulders in the draft last Tuesday. Here’s what I wrote about him the day after:

A 24-year-old right-handed batter from Venezuela, signed by the San Diego Padres in 2017. Did not impress with the bat in the small sample available (.255/.327/.367), but did retire 33% of would-be stealers. That’s where he might have impressed in the tryouts and could be an option as a backup, but just speculating.

May 13: Placed catcher Ruben Castro and RHP Mitch Neunborn on the inactive list.

May 13: Traded LHP Dario Polanco to the Tri-City ValleyCats for two players to be named later.

May 14: Signed OF Dane Tofteland.

Evansville Otters

May 13: Signed INF Trenton Nash, INF Cristopher Pujols, and RHP Jake Woods. All were selected in the Draft on Tuesday. Here are the details I mentioned then:

Trent Nash (2B)

Very little info on him, but must have impressed the Otters to take a chance on him when you consider their current infield options.

Cristopher Pujols (SS)

A right-handed batter out of the Mets organization, signed in 2016 at 18 years old. He never made it out of Rookie ball and has a career .263 average. Another infielder added to the mix in camp. The competition on that field will be intense!

Jake Woods (RHP)

There’s a lot to like in this 22-year-old arm: he misses bats and doesn’t allow a ton of walks. I could see him being a potential surprise in camp and get some high leverage innings under the tutelage of Pitching Coach Max Peterson.

Florence Y’alls

May 13: Signed catcher Colton Parrish and RHP Ean Walda. They were both selected in the Draft this week, here’s what was written, including an edit after I texted with the Florence Pitching Strategist, Chad Rhoades:

Very little can be found on Walda, other than he’ll turn 26 during the season and has a 6–3, 215 lbs frame.

Edit: Chad Rhoades, the Florence Pitching Strategist, sent me this:

Walda has a simple, repeatable delivery and a competitive mindset. Three pitches: four-seam, slurve with more depth than slide and a changeup he sells with good handspeed. He needs to stay on the attack, but keep his excitability in check to allow his pitches to play. I have seen him pitch with the Blacksox and tracked his progression over the last few months. Late developer to ‘pitching’, but he can throw.

Colton Parrish (Catcher)

A 24-year-old left-handed batter that has great plate discipline.He’ll be the fifth catcher in camp, so there’s also a possibility that he could get reps at 1B and in the corner outfield if his bat produces. Keep an eye on him.

New York Boulders

May 13: Traded LHP Dario Polanco to Équipe Québec for future considerations. He was picked by the Boulders in the Draft earlier this week and there is very little to be found on him, as mentioned in my draft recap on Wednesday. Expect him to be an arm out of the bullpen for manager Patrick Scalabrini.

Sussex County Miners

May 13: Signed OF Nick Adgar, a six-foot tall right-handed batter on which very little info can be found. He had a handful of pro ball at-bats last year in pod play, but other than that I can’t tell you anything.

May 13: Signed LHP Tyler Alexander, a big leaguer who was released by the Detroit Tigers that is very intriguing when you consider he can be a starter and a reliever and has ratios of 8.2 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9 in three seasons in the major leagues. His ground ball rate is around 42% and average exit velocity is 89.7 mph so a very nice pick up for the Miners.

May 13: Signed RHP Jalen Miller, Sr, a relief pitcher who can strike out a high number of batters (never recorded a K/9 under 10.4 since 2016 in pro ball) and allow his fair share of walks, but he had this aspect under control for the first time in 2020 in the American Association (3.9). Sussex County just keeps getting better and better. Expect to see him out of the bullpen in high leverage situations in 2021.

Tri-City Valleycats

May 13: Released INF Brandon Dadson and RHP Zaquiel Puentes. Both were released because of Visa issues. As you’ll see in the interview with manager Pete Incaviglia and GM Matt Callahan, they were not too happy with this situation.

Brandon Dadson was picked up by Équipe Québec. The transaction has not been posted yet, but I was allowed to share the information. The Canadian is one player to keep an eye on in camp.

Premiers alignements

Vendredi a été la première fois que nous pouvions voir des alignements de la Frontier League au cours des 600 derniers jours! Imaginez ça. De nombreux matchs pré-saison sont disponibles pour les fans de la ligue, parfois gratuitement. Assurez-vous de suivre les équipes sur leurs plateformes de médias sociaux respectives pour toutes les informations / actions. Wild Things au camp

Chris Dugan fait son truc avec l’Observer-Reporter depuis longtemps et il a un article dans le journal d’aujourd’hui sur le voltigeur des Washington Wild Things, Bralin Jackson. À la fin de son billet, il a quelques informations sur le camp de l’équipe, incluant cette pépite du nouveau manager, Tom Vaeth.

«J’évalue ce que je vois dans les situations de match», a déclaré Vaeth. «J’ai vu des gars passer des jours terribles au camp, puis sortir et avoir trois coups sûrs en situation de match. J’ai également eu des gars qui ont fière allure à l’entraînement au bâton et vous vous demandez pourquoi ils sont ici (baseball indépendant) et ensuite, dans un match, ils semblent ne pas pouvoir toucher l’eau s’ils tombent d’un bateau.”

Reece Karalus — Lanceur

«Sa performance dans le cinquième match de la première ronde des séries éliminatoires était aussi bonne que vous le verrez. 4 manches, 0 coups sûrs, 0 BB et 9 SO contre une grande formation. Rien de moins et nous ne voyons pas les finales. Lui et Brammer à l’arrière de l’enclos des releveurs donnent beaucoup de confiance à notre équipe.

Santiago Chirino — Joueur d‘avant-champs

David Glaude est un joueur talentueux et aimé au Québec et il a fait partie d’un gros échange en 2019 qui l’a vu passer des Aigles aux Capitales. Il s’est entretenu avec Carl Tardif et cet article paraît dans l’édition d’aujourd’hui du Soleil:

Impliqué dans l’une des plus importantes transactions entre les Aigles de Trois-Rivières et les Capitales de Québec en novembre 2019, David Glaude ne peut toujours pas couper les ponts avec son ancienne équipe et devenir membre à part entière de sa nouvelle, fusion d’un été oblige!

Glaude était à bord de l’autocar menant les joueurs québécois dans l’État de New York, vendredi, en prévision de l’ouverture du camp d’entraînement, samedi. Il l’a fait avec l’espoir de revenir jouer à Québec et Trois-Rivières, en juillet et août, mais aussi avec le spectre de passer tout l’été aux États-Unis.

«Quand la nouvelle est sortie à l’effet qu’on pourrait jouer toute la saison là-bas, ma blonde m’avait dit, j’espère que tu vas y aller. On n’a pas d’enfant, elle enseigne au primaire, il me reste encore un an pour finir mes études, je vais consacrer tout mon été au baseball et je pars l’esprit en paix. Si je ne reviens pas, Noémie [Gauthier] pourrait venir me voir là-bas et elle aura la maison pour elle toute seule pour faire une quarantaine…», notait le futur arpenteur-géomètre.

14 mai: Signé le joueur d’intérieur Abdiel Alicia Diaz. Il a été choisi dans le repêchage mardi, mais aucune information ne m’est disponible à son sujet. J’ai contacté son gérant, Cameron Roth, alors voyons le rapport de dépistage qu’il fournit, je vous tiendrai au courant.

Comme je l’ai mentionné dans cet article, les Boomers étaient l’une des mentions honorables de cet événement, car leur rotation avait besoin d’un coup de pouce et ils pourraient avoir deux bras très intéressants avec lesquels travailler. Bon travail, baby-boomers.

Miners de Southern Illinois

14 mai: Signé le LD Wes Noble, LD Kaleb Schmidt et receveur Fernando Villegas.

Équipe Québec

13 mai: signé le receveur Jorge Garcia. J’hésite à parler de lui, car je ne suis pas sûr d’avoir le bon profil en faisant mes recherches. Celui sur lequel je me penche pointe vers un ancien 1B / DH de la California State University et a joué deux matchs derrière le marbre en 2017. Il peut vraiment frapper dans le baseball, mais c’était contre une concurrence inférieure, alors ne nous excitons pas trop et attendez plus d’infos ou son évolution au camp printannier.

13 mai: signé le receveur Miguel Molina, un choix de deuxième ronde des Boulders de New York lors du repêchage mardi dernier. Voici ce que j’ai écrit à son sujet le lendemain:

Un batteur droitier de 24 ans du Venezuela, signé par les Padres de San Diego en 2017. N’a pas impressionné avec la batte dans le petit échantillon disponible (.255 / .327 / .367), mais a retiré 33% des voleurs de buts potentiels. C’est là qu’il aurait pu impressionner lors des essais et pourrait être une option en tant que 2e receveur dans l’équipe, mais c’est de la pure spéculation.

Otters d’Evansville

13 mai: signé les joueurs d’avant-champs Trenton Nash et Cristopher Pujols et le LD Jake Woods. Tous ont été sélectionnés dans le repêchage de mardi. Voici les détails que j’ai mentionnés alors:

Trent Nash (2B)

Très peu d’informations sur lui, mais il a dû impressionner les Otters pour tenter leur chance sur lui lorsque vous considérez leurs options actuelles sur le terrain.

Cristopher Pujols (SS)

Un batteur droitier de l’organisation Mets, signé en 2016 à 18 ans. Il n’a jamais réussi à sortir du niveau Rookie et a une moyenne de .263 en carrière. Un autre joueur de champ intérieur a ajouté au mélange au camp. La compétition sur ce terrain sera intense!

Jake Woods (RHP)

Il y a beaucoup à aimer dans ce bras de 22 ans: il manque les bâtons et ne permet pas une tonne de buts sur balles. Je pourrais le voir être une surprise potentielle au camp et obtenir des manches critiques sous la tutelle de l’entraîneur des lanceurs Max Peterson.

Y’alls de Florence

13 mai: signé le receveur Colton Parrish et le lanceur droitier Ean Walda. Ils ont tous deux été sélectionnés dans le repêchage cette semaine, voici ce qui a été écrit, y compris une modification après avoir envoyé un texto avec le stratège des lanceurs de Florence, Chad Rhoades:

Très peu de choses peuvent être trouvées sur Walda, à part il aura 26 ans au cours de la saison et a un cadre de 6 à 3 et 215 livres.

Edit: Chad Rhoades, le stratège du pitch de Florence, m’a envoyé ceci:
Walda a une livraison simple et reproductible et un état d’esprit compétitif. Trois lancers: balle rapide four-seam, slurve avec plus de profondeur qu’une balle glissante et un changement de vitesse qu’il vend avec une bonne vitesse manuelle. Il doit rester sur l’attaque, mais garder son excitabilité sous contrôle pour permettre à ses lancers de jouer. Je l’ai vu jouer avec les Blacksox et suivi sa progression au cours des derniers mois. Développement tardif à «lancer», mais il peut lancer.

Colton Parrish (receveur)

Un batteur gaucher de 24 ans qui a une grande discipline au marbre. Il sera le cinquième receveur du camp, donc il y a aussi une possibilité qu’il puisse obtenir des répétitions à 1B et dans le champ extérieur de coin si sa batte produit. Gardez un œil sur lui.

Boulders de New York

13 mai: Échange du LG Dario Polanco à l’Équipe Québec pour des considérations futures. Il a été choisi par les Boulders lors du repêchage plus tôt cette semaine et il y a très peu de choses à trouver sur lui, comme mentionné dans mon récapitulatif de mercredi. Attendez-vous à ce qu’il soit un bras hors de l’enclos des releveurs pour le gérant Patrick Scalabrini.

Miners de Sussex County

13 mai: Signé le V Nick Adgar, un frappeur droitier de six pieds de haut sur lequel très peu d’informations peuvent être trouvées. Il a eu une poignée d’apparitions au bâton l’an dernier en pod play, mais à part ça, je ne peux rien vous dire.

13 mai: Signé le LG Tyler Alexander, un grand ligueur qui a été libéré par les Tigers de Detroitet qui est très intriguant quand on considère qu’il peut être un partant et un releveur et a des ratios de 8,2 RAB/ 9 et 1,7 BB / 9 en trois saisons dans les ligues majeures. Son taux de balle au sol est d’environ 42% et sa vitesse de sortie moyenne du bâton est de 89,7 mi / h, donc une très belle prise pour les Miners.

13 mai: Signé le LD Jalen Miller, Sr, un lanceur de relève qui peut retirer un grand nombre de frappeurs (jamais enregistré un RAB/ 9 sous les 10,4 depuis 2016 en balle pro) et permettre sa juste part de BB, mais il avait cet aspect sous contrôle pour la première fois en 2020 dans l’Association Américaine (3,9). Les Miners ne cesse de s’améliorer. Attendez-vous à le voir sortir de l’enclos des releveurs dans des situations critiques en 2021.

Valleycats de Tri-City

13 mai: libéré le joueur d’avant-champs Brandon Dadson et le LD Zaquiel Puentes. Les deux ont été libérés en raison de problèmes de visa. Comme vous le verrez dans l’entretien avec le manager Pete Incaviglia et le directeur général Matt Callahan, ils n’étaient pas très satisfaits de cette situation.

Brandon Dadson a été repris par Équipe Québec. La transaction n’a pas encore été publiée, mais j’ai été autorisé à partager l’information. Le Canadien est un joueur à surveiller au camp.
