Transactions — March 11 / 11 Mars

A relatively slow day, yesterday, in the Frontier League as far as transactions go. That gave me some time to get myself acquainted with a lot of the Front Office people on all the teams’s website, on top of working on some ideas for future coverage. Ottawa Titans
Sam Katz, one of the owners of the club, also controls the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association. The new Ottawa club replaces the Champions, which were not brought in from the fusion of the Can-Am League to the Frontier League. That is a bizarre twist to the story when you realize that the Champions owner, Miles Wolff, was actually the Commissioner of the Can-Am League and a major part of independent baseball history in North America.
March 10: signed catcher Tanner Murphy, 26 years old, to create a really dangerous tandem alongside World Series winner Hector Sanchez. He was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves, but his bat has never matched his defense, unfortunately (.206/.306/.300 in six seasons of affiliated ball). Murphy has caught 31% of runners trying to steal bases in that same time period. He was initially acquired from the Gateway Grizzlies alongside Nick Anderson on December 2nd in exchange for a player to be named later.
His manager, Steve Brook, had this to say about the new Titan:
“Murph is one of the best teammates I’ve had the privilege of managing over the course of my career,” said Titans Manager Steve Brook. “He’s extremely experienced behind the plate and works extensively with our pitching staff to help get the most out of each individual. He leads by example both on and off the field and will make a huge impact on our 2021 club.”
Evansville Otters
March 10: signed Dakota Phillips to a contract extension and becomes the third catcher on their active roster. He is a 25-year-old left-handed batter that was on the 2019 Evansville team, appearing in 64 games at every position except 2B, SS and CF, hitting a combined .233/.302/.397.
Florence Y’alls
The franchise is tied with the Schaumburg Boomers and River City Rascals for most Frontier League championships with 3… but they all came under their precedent team names: Erie Sailors (1994), Johnstown Steal (1995), and Johnstown Johnnies (2000)
March 10: signed LHP Grayson Huffman, a 25-year-old sixth-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014. He was released in March 2020 by the team and the numbers tell us that his main problem is the high amount of walks he allows (5.2 BB/9 in 147 IP in the minors, but only 2 HR allowed), on top of having dealt with elbow issues in 2018 that lead to Tommy John surgery. 2019 was actually a pretty good year for him, strking out way more batters than he did in the past (11.3 K/9), but the same problem with the free passes. He throws a fastball / slider combination that he mixes up with a changeup. Overall, a good signing by Florence, since Huffman will be looking to show with he can do and hope to get noticed by scouts.

Titans d’Ottawa
Sam Katz, un des propriétaires du club, est aussi en charge des Winnipeg Goldeyes de l’Association Américaine. La nouvelle équipe à Ottawa remplace les Champions, qui n’ont pas été inclus dans la fusion de la ligue Can-Am avec la Frontier League. C’est un dénouement bizarre quand on considère que le propriétaire des Champions était Miles Wolff, commissionnaire de la défunte entité indépendante et un acteur majeur dans le développement du baseball indépendant en Amérique du Nord.
10 mars: signature du receveur Tanner Murphy, 26 ans, afin de créer un tandem dangereux aux côtés de Hector Sanchez, ancien gagnant de la Série Mondiale avec les Giants de San Francisco. Il a été sélectionné en 4e ronde du repêchage amateur de 2013 par les Braves d’Atlanta, mais son bâton n’a jamais été capable d’égaler sa défensive, malheureusement (.206/.306/.300 en six saisons dans les ligues mineures). Murphy a retiré 31% des voleurs de buts durant cette même période. Il a été acquis par les Titans (avec aussi Nick Anderson) des Grizzlies de Gateway le 2 décembre dernier, en échange d’un joueur à être annoncé plus tard.
Son gérant, Steve Brook, avait ceci à dire sur le nouveau Titan:
“Murph est un des meilleurs coéquipiers que j’ai eu le privilège de gérer au cours de ma carrière. Il est extrêmement expérimenté derrière le marbre et travaille très fort avec notre personnel de lanceurs pour en tirer le meilleur. Il prêche par l’exemple sur le terrain et dans le vestiaire. Il aura un gros impact sur notre équipe 2021.”
Otters d’Evansville
10 mars: signature de Dakota Phillips à une extension de contrat et devient le troisième receveur sur leur liste de joueurs actifs. Âgé de 25 ans, ce frappeur gaucher était également sur l’édition 2019 des Otters, apparaissant dans 64 matchs à toutes les positions sauf 2B, AC et VC, accumulant ainsi une ligne offensive de .233/.302/.397.
Y’alls du Florence
Cette organisation est à égalité avec les Boomers de Schaumburg et les Rascals de River City pour le plus grand nombre de titre de la Frontier League avec 3… mais ils sont tous venus alors que l’équipe opérait sous d’autres noms: Erie Sailors (1994), Johnstown Steal (1995), and Johnstown Johnnies (2000).
10 mars: signature du lanceur gaucher Grayson Huffman, un joueur de 25 ans qui avait été une sélection de 4e ronde des Blue Jays de Toronto lors du repêchage amateur de 2014. Ils l’ont relâché en mars 2020 et ses statistiques nous indiquent la principale raison avec une inhabileté à limiter les buts sur balles (5.2 BB/9 en 147 manches lancées dans les ligues mineures, mais seulement 2 CC alloués), mais il a en plus dû subir une opération Tommy John suite à une blessure au coude en 2018. La saison 2019 avait été prometteuse, car il retirait un plus grand nombre de frappeurs au bâton (11.3 RAB/9), mais le même problème de buts sur balles faisait surface. Il lance une combinaison de balle rapide / balle glissante, insérant parfois un changement de vitesse pour déjouer les frappeurs. Somme toute, ceci est une belle signature pour les Y’alls, considérant que Huffman tentera de redorer son image au niveau indépendant et espérer être remarqué par un club du baseball majeur.
