News & Transactions: McFadden, Figueroa, Angulo, Sano, Walters

Last night, as I watched Minor League Baseball on my computer, it immediately transported me to the live Can-Am games I was able to watch, almost two years ago. There is no word to describe how eager I am to watch the Frontier League action unfolds, the box scores try to tell me the story and the different storylines that will emerge around players trying to take the next step in their career.
I feel honoured and privileged, as I sit here this morning typing these words, to know there’s a quickly growing community around the Frontier League Journal that will be able to exchange and wonder about these feats. The traffic has multiplied and I thank you, sincerely, for the daily support.
Later today, two more posts on top of this one will be released:
- The Kent Mariners (UK) video interview about baseball in England, but also their partnership with the Lake Erie Crushers. As you’ll see, Scott Mackay is very passionate about baseball and it makes for a great discussion.
- A look at the Home Run Derby option that the Frontier League is considering to replace the runner on second base rule to decide tie games in extra innings. I collected a few arguments from people around the league about their support, or not, of this option that has yet to be confirmed by the league. Very interesting stuff, check it out when it comes out around dinner time.
News & Notes
In an article released late yesterday by the Southern Illinoisan, Mike Pinto, manager of the Southern Illinois Miners, gave a few information worth mentioning:
- Their top four arm for the rotation are Chase Cunningham, Gunnar Kines, Steven Ridings and Zac Westcott. They mention Justin Ferrell as a late innings option, but according to Mike in our conversation, he could also be an option for the fifth starter spot.
- Players are to arrive at camp on May 11–12 and they’ll play their first games on May 14–15 against the Black Sox, a touring independent team. They have planned 9 exhibition games before Opening Day on May 27.
Équipe Québec has released its schedule for the 2021 season. Hopefully, they’ll be able to play home games in Trois-Rivières and Québec, starting July 23rd.
On that front, good news, has some restrictions will be lifted across the Province of Quebec on Monday. COVID cases are dropping and the vaccination drive is going full bore. Living there, I can tell you we are in a very positive wave right now after a very dark winter.
Windy City Thunderbolts
May 4: signed UT Dakota McFadden. An interesting use of the term “Utility”, here. Why? Because Dakota can rake from the right side of the plate, but also throw his way on the pitching staff. You read it correctly. After doing some digging around with Dakota in private messages, his stats and emailing with his manager, Brian Smith, he’ll have every chance to prove what he can do on both sides of the ball during camp. I also received a few direct messages of support for him, all very excited that he was given this opportunity.
That’s very exciting, especially considering his potential and the fact that Brandon Bingel, with the NY Boulders, is set to go full-on with that plan in 2021. He is 25 years old, 6–4 and 225 lbs. He has a great eye at the plate, a lot of power and speed (has only been caught stealing one in 16 tries since 2017).
Tri-City ValleyCats
May 4: Signed catcher Daniel Angulo, a left-handed batter that comes from the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Not a lot of info is available on Angulo, but he has a good eye at the plate and has retired 33% of would-be stealers in two seasons of affiliated ball. He joins three other candidates that will be vying for time behind the plate in 2021: Jake Barbee, Oscar Campos and Jhon Nunez.
May 4: Signed RHP Carlos Sano, from the Dominican Republic, who was released by the San Francisco Giants on April 29. In two seasons of affiliated ball, he had ratios of 1.2 HR/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 9.2 K/9. I could not find his complete arsenal, but as you’ll see in the video below, he has very good life on his fastball and secondary pitches. It’s all about command, in his case, so if he can master that, he is certainly a dangerous weapon out of the ValleyCats bullpen.

Southern Illinois Miners
Mays 4: Signed RHP Mitchell Walters, a 23-year-old Texan who was released by the Tampa Bay Rays. Manager Mike Pinto had this to say to me about him:
He can get the strikeout late in the game. Has closing experience at Wichita State. We have seen some video and have reports from the Rays. Very excited to add these guys to our pen mix.
Sussex County Miners
Mays 4: Signed INF Martin Figueroa, a very productive switch-hitter who’s making a return with the Miners after destroying pitchers in 2018: .328/.444/.481. He played mainly 3B while he was there, but also a bit of 1B and even five innings as a catcher. .317/.420/.497 is his batting line in four seasons of pro ball. Great addition for the already stacked Miners.
May 4: Released RHP Mike Appel.
May 4: Placed RHP Cody Mincey and INF Adam Sasser on the inactive list.
Schaumburg Boomers
May4: Traded INF Chris Clare to the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association for future considerations.

Congratulations are in order for Watson, a left-handed batter who was previously in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and has shown power potential, but his pitch recognition seems to be a work in progress.

Hier soir, alors que je regardais l’action de la première journée des ligues mineures sur mon ordinateur, cela m’a immédiatement transporté vers les matchs Can-Am au stade que j’ai pu voir, il y a presque deux ans. Il n’y a pas de mot pour décrire à quel point je suis impatient de regarder se dérouler l’action de la Frontier League, les “box scores” tenter de me raconter l’histoire et les différents scénarios qui émergeront autour des joueurs essayant de franchir la prochaine étape de leur carrière.
Je me sens honoré et privilégié, alors que je suis assis ici ce matin en tapant ces mots, de savoir qu’il y a une communauté en pleine croissance autour du Journal de la Frontier League qui pourra échanger et s’interroger sur ces exploits. Le trafic sur ces pages s’est multiplié et je vous remercie, sincèrement, pour le soutien quotidien.
Plus tard dans la journée, deux autres articles en plus de celui-ci seront publiés:
- Interview vidéo des Kent Mariners (Royaume-Uni) sur le baseball en Angleterre, mais aussi leur partenariat avec les Crushers de Lake Erie. Comme vous le verrez, Scott Mackay est très passionné par le baseball et c’est une excellente discussion.
- Un regard sur l’option du Concours de Coups de Circuit que la Frontier League envisage pour remplacer la règle du coureur au deuxième but pour décider des matchs ex aequo en manches supplémentaires. J’ai recueilli quelques arguments de personnes autour de la ligue sur leur soutien, ou non, à cette option qui n’a pas encore été confirmée par la ligue. Des trucs très intéressants; à lire quand il sortira vers l’heure du souper.
Nouvelles et notes
Dans un article publié hier par le Southern Illinoisan, Mike Pinto, gérant des Miners de Southern Illinois, a donné quelques informations qui méritent d’être mentionnées:
- Leurs quatre meilleurs bras pour la rotation sont Chase Cunningham, Gunnar Kines, Steven Ridings et Zac Westcott. Ils mentionnent Justin Ferrell comme une option pour les manches tardives, mais selon Mike dans notre conversation, il pourrait également être une option pour la cinquième place de partant.
- Les joueurs doivent arriver au camp les 11 et 12 mai et disputeront leurs premiers matchs les 14 et 15 mai contre les Black Sox, une équipe indépendante en tournée. Ils ont prévu 9 matchs d’exhibition avant la journée d’ouverture le 27 mai.
Équipe Québec a publié son calendrier pour la saison 2021. Espérons qu’ils pourront disputer des matchs à domicile à Trois-Rivières et à Québec à partir du 23 juillet.
Sur ce front, bonne nouvelle, car certaines restrictions seront levées dans toute la province de Québec, lundi prochain. Les cas de COVID sont en baisse et la campagne de vaccination est en plein essor. Vivant là-bas, je peux vous dire que nous sommes dans une vague très positive en ce moment après un hiver très sombre.
Thunderbolts de Windy City
4 mai: signé le joueur d’utilité Dakota McFadden. Une utilisation intéressante du terme «utilitaire», ici. Pourquoi? Parce que Dakota peut vraiment frapper la balle avec impact du côté droit de la plaque, mais aussi se frayer un chemin sur le monticule en tant que lanceur. Vous avez lu correctement. Après avoir parlé avec Dakota dans des messages privés, ses statistiques et des courriels avec son gérant, Brian Smith, il aura toutes les chances de prouver ce qu’il peut faire des deux côtés de la balle pendant le camp. J’ai également reçu quelques messages directs de soutien à son égard, tous très heureux qu’il ait cette opportunité.
C’est très excitant, surtout compte tenu de son potentiel et du fait que Brandon Bingel, avec les NY Boulders, est prêt à appliquer ce plan en 2021. Il a 25 ans, mesure 6–4 et pèse 225 lbs. Il a un bon oeil au marbre, beaucoup de puissance et de vitesse (il n’a été retiré qu’une seule fois en 16 essais de vol de buts, depuis 2017).
Tri-City ValleyCats
4 mai: signé le receveur Daniel Angulo, frappeur gaucher issu de l’organisation des Pirates de Pittsburgh. Pas beaucoup d’informations sont disponibles sur Angulo, mais il a un bon œil au marbre et a retiré 33% des voleurs de buts potentiels en deux saisons de balle affiliée. Il rejoint trois autres candidats qui se disputeront du temps derrière le marbre en 2021: Jake Barbee, Oscar Campos et Jhon Nunez.
4 mai: signé le lanceur droitier Carlos Sano, de République Dominicaine, qui a été libéré par les Giants de San Francisco le 29 avril. En deux saisons de balle affiliée, il avait des ratios de 1.2 CC/9, 3.9 BB/9 et 9.2 RAB/9 . Je n’ai pas pu trouver son arsenal complet, mais comme vous le verrez dans la vidéo ci-dessous, il a une très belle vie sur sa balle rapide et ses lancers secondaires. Tout est une question de commandement dans son cas, donc s’il peut maîtriser cela, il est certainement une arme dangereuse hors de l’enclos des ValleyCats.

Miners de Southern Illinois
4 mai: Signé la lanceur droitier Mitchell Walters, un texan de 23 ans qui a été libéré par les Rays de Tampa Bay. Le gérant Mike Pinto avait ceci à me dire à son sujet:
Il peut obtenir le retrait en fin de partie. A une expérience de ‘closer’ à l’université de Wichita State. Nous avons vu des vidéos et des rapports des Rays. Très excité d’ajouter ce gars à notre mix de releveurs.
Miners de Sussex County
4 mai: signé le joueur d’avant-champs Martin Figueroa, un frappeur ambidextre très productif qui fait un retour avec les Miners après avoir détruit les lanceurs en 2018: .328/.444/.481. Il a joué principalement au 3B pendant qu’il était là-bas, mais aussi un peu de 1B et même cinq manches en tant que receveur. .317/.420/.497 est sa ligne offensive en quatre saisons de balle professionnelle. Excellent ajout pour les Miners qui sont déjà remplis de menaces à l’attaque.
4 mai: libéré le LD Mike Appel.
4 mai: placé le lanceur froitier Cody Mincey et joueur d’avant-champs Adam Sasser sur la liste inactive.

Des félicitations sont de mise pour Watson, un batteur gaucher qui était auparavant dans l’organisation des Diamondbacks de l’Arizona et a montré un potentiel de puissance, mais son oeil au bâton semble être un travail en cours.
