Frontier League Draft: 21 players, 21 reports // 21 joueurs, 21 rapports

Yesterday, the Frontier League held a Dispersal Draft to allow the non-Canadian players of the Ottawa Titans and Trois-Rivieres Aigles to be selected by one of the 13 teams in the Unites States and play their 2021 season with them.

• 21 players selected: 8 from the Aigles, 13 from the Titans.
• Both of those teams regain the rights to the players after the 2021.
• The non-Canadian players not selected become free agents for the 2021 season.
• The Canadian players may be part of the “Province of Quebec” Team that will be on the road through July 23rd and managed by Quebec City Capitales manager, Patrick Scalabrini. If the Canada / US border is open by then, the team will split its home games between Trois-Rivieres and Quebec. Expect the new 2021 team name and logo today or this weekend.
• Team Quebec will begin training camp on May 14 at the home of the ValleyCats of Tri-City, in Troy.
• The season opener will take place on May 27 when Team Quebec will travel to Gateway to face the Grizzlies.
• The Canadian citizens who were on the Ottawa and Trois-Rivieres rosters have been assigned to the team representing the Province of Quebec for the 2021 season. These players are RHP Mateos Kekatos, RHP Alex Nolan, INF Elliott Curtis, and INF Taylor Wright from Ottawa and LHP Sam Belisle-Springer, LHP David Gauthier, catcher Morgan Lofstrom, catcher Cole Warken, INF Brendon Dadson, 3B James Smibert, and OF Raphael Gladu.

Lake Erie Crushers

The Crushers completely revamped their infield in one day. Great selections for a team that scored 4.83 runs a game in 2019, the best showing in the league.

• Trevor Achenbach (INF): the 26-year-old can play all over the infield and was a big reason why the River City Rascals won their championship in 2019, before folding as a franchise. He can hit for average and power.
• Brian Dansereau (INF): Same with Dansereau who can play all over the diamond and can really hit. Since 2018 in College and the Pecos League, he’s produced an offensive line of .329/.414/.539, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can keep this up in the Frontier League. I’ll try and have a talk with him to see his approach coming into the season.

South Illinois Miners

• Gunnar Kines (LHP): The 27-year-old spent times with the Marlins and actually held his own, but he has found success in the Frontier League: 2.95 ERA, 0.5 HR/9, 2.5 BB/9 and 9.5 K/9. He can pitch in the mid-90s and has a very deceptive motion with his 6'3', 210 lbs frame. He will be a starter and try to repeat his 2019 mastery. With Chase Cunningham also returning to the rotation in 2021, this is scary stuff for the opposing teams.
• Justin Ferrell (RHP): The 27-year-old was with the Houston organization up until 2019 and reached AAA. Walks were a problem, however, as he climbed the steps of the minor leagues and got away from what made him successful. He throws a 4-seam fastball, curve, slider and change. He’ll be a reliever for the Miners.
• Tyler Sandoval (Catcher): He has never played pro ball, but it is a good idea to take a flyer on him and bring him to camp when you consider that, since 2015, he’s hit .295/.396/.482 and been strong behind the plate.

Sussex County Miners

• Cody Mincey (RHP): the 29-year-old can really miss some bat out of the bullpen and doesn’t get bothered by too much walks. He was pitching for the Long Island Ducks in 2019 and had ratios of 12.8 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. With the Miners in the bottom half of the strikeouts standings in 2019, Mincey could help strike down the opposition in high leverage situation.
• Juan Kelly (INF): What CAN’T he do? He is a switch-hitter who hits for average, power and plays both corners of the infield. He crushed his way in 2019 with the Aigles with a .951 OPS. Being from the Dominican Republic, the visa will have to be handled before the season and it might have scared off some teams and the reason why he was taken so late. If he gets by, however, the Miners just made a big coup!

Tri-City Valleycats

• Brandt Broussard (INF/OF): the 25-year-old right-handed batter can play up the middle (mostly 2B/CF) and has some speed. He has not faced the caliber of competition of the Frontier League, but he’s an intriguing pick for the 2021 season.
• Zane Gelphman (INF / OF): Another righty option for manager Pete Cavaglia. He also hasn’t faced the level of competition of the FL, but he has huge power upside and has been on the bases close to 39% of his at-bats since 2017.

Windy City Thunderbolts

• Jack Strunc (INF): a bit concerned about this pick, but obviously there may be a role for him that’s unknown to me. The right-hander can play 2B/SS, so that’s always good value, but the bat is a bit weak, especially since Frontier League baseball will be the highest level of competition he has faced.
• Zach Racusin (OF): a 27 year-old right-handed batter that brings an ability to make contact with the ball and reach base (.353 OBP in 6 seasons of college and independent ball). His weakness is clearly a lack of power, so it will be interesting to see how much playing time he’ll get from his manager.

Evansville Otters

• Jackie Urbaez (INF): a switch-hitter from Miami that was released by the Milwaukee Brewers. Not a huge amount of info on him, so let’s see what the team wrote about him this morning on their site:

In only 57 games, Urbaez had 38 hits, ten of those for extra bases, with 24 runs scored, 23 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases.

“Urbaez was one of the players available we were really hopeful to get, and fortunately we had a high draft spot to select him,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said.

“Frontier League coaches and scouts have given him high praise on his potential in this league, and he fills a need for us on our roster. We can’t wait to see him on the field in May.”

Washington Wild Things

• Andrew Penner (INF/OF): Another player who was a big reason for the River City Rascals’ success in 2019: .282/.366/.375. He saw a drop in his power output in pro ball, but still maintained his ability to get on base and put the ball in play while playing every position except 1B and C. That’s a player you want on your team! The Wild Things have added a lot of talent in the last few days, when you also consider this trade for Kevin McNorton and Joe DeLuca.

Schaumburg Boomers

• Chris Clare (INF): a versatile right-handed batter that was a Baltimore Orioles farmhand for 4 seasons before being released. He was not dominant at all with the bat with them, but I suspect a rebound in the Frontier League when you consider his output in College. The league could become a good middle ground for him where he finds success.
• Tasker Strobel (LHP): the 26-year-old can miss some bats, but he’ll also have to limit his walks allowed. At 6'3', 190 lbs, the southpaw is an interesting pick to click in 2021. He told me after the draft that he was relieved that he could find a home.

Gateway Grizzlies

• Cody Thompson (RHP): Cody can be dominant, but also get hurt with the walks he allows. He pitched to a 4.97 ERA in 2019 with the Southern Illinois Miners.
• Tanner Cable (RHP): This will be his 4th season in the Frontier League and he has HUGE upside out of the bullpen (10.6 K/9) since 2015…. but the walks MUST go down in order to really be a threat and be trusted in high leverage situations by his manager. He was also a weapon for the River City Rascals in 2019.

New York Boulders

• Wilfred Salaman (LHP): he has experience has a starter and reliever in the Milwaukee Brewers system, throwing his fastball 89 to 92 mph. His stats suggest a reliable arm that can eat innings without hurting you too much.

New Jersey Jackals

• Jason Zgardowski (RHP): Another big arm that was with River City in 2019: (2.39 ERA), 9.7 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9. He has been in the Phillies and Cardinals systems. He throws a fastball in the mid-90s, a slider and splitter.
• Jack Weinberger (RHP): a 6'5 righty that has limited pro ball experience and has not started a game since 2017. Manager Brooks Carey might need him out of the bullpen in 2021.

Jolliett Slammers

• Keaton Sullivan (RHP): Unfortunately, I could not find anything on Sullivan. We’ll get back to him during the season, trust me.

Hier, la Frontier League a organisé un Repêchage de Dispersion pour permettre aux joueurs non canadiens des Titans d’Ottawa et des Aigles de Trois-Rivières d’être sélectionnés par l’une des 13 équipes des États-Unis et de jouer leur saison 2021 avec eux.

Crushers de Lake Erie

Les Crushers ont complètement réorganisé leur champ intérieur en une journée, sil ils gardent les joueurs, bien sûr. De très bonnes sélections pour une équipe qui a marqué 4,83 points par match en 2019, la meilleure performance de la ligue.

• Trevor Achenbach (Avant-champs): le joueur de 26 ans peut jouer partout dans le champ intérieur et a été l’une des principales raisons pour lesquelles les Rascals de River City ont remporté leur championnat en 2019, avant de mettre fin à leurs opérations. Il peut frapper pour une bonne moyenne et de la puissance.
• Brian Dansereau (Avant-champs): Même chose avec Dansereau qui peut jouer partout sur le diamant et peut vraiment frapper. Depuis 2018 au collège et dans la Pecos League, il a produit une ligne offensive de .329/.414/.539, il sera donc intéressant de voir s’il peut continuer sa domination dans la Frontier League. Je vais essayer de discuter avec lui pour voir parler des derniers jours et de la saison 2021.

Miners de South Illinois

• Gunnar Kines (LG): Le joueur de 27 ans a passé du temps avec les Marlins et a tenu bon, mais il a trouvé le succès dans la Frontier League: 2.95 ERA, 0.5 HR / 9, 2.5 BB / 9 et 9.5 K / 9 . Sa balle rapide se maintient à 95 mph et a il a une motion trompeuse avec son cadre de 6'3 ‘et 210 lbs. Il sera un partant et tentera de répéter sa domination de 2019. Avec Chase Cunningham revenant également dans la rotation en 2021, la situation me semble effrayante pour les équipes adverses.
• Justin Ferrell (LD): Le joueur de 27 ans était avec l’organisation des Astros de Houston jusqu’en 2019 et a atteint le niveau AAA. Les buts sur balles étaient un problème, cependant, car il gravissait les niveaux des ligues mineures, mais s’éloignait de ses forces de ce qui l’avait fait réussir dans le passé. Il lance une balle rapide four-seam, une courbe, une balle glissante et un changement de vitesse. Il sera un releveur pour les Miners.
• Tyler Sandoval (receveur): Il n’a jamais joué au baseball professionnel, mais c’est une bonne idée de tenter leur chance avec lui et de l’amener au camp quand on considère que, depuis 2015, il a frappé .295/.396/.482 et a été efficace défensivement derrière le marbre.

Miners de Sussex County

• Cody Mincey (LD): le joueur de 29 ans peut vraiment accumuler les retraits au bâton hors de l’enclos et ne pas être dérangé par trop de buts sur balles. Il lançait pour les Long Island Ducks en 2019 et avait des ratios de 12,8 RAB/9 et 3,5 BB/9. Avec les Miners dans la moitié inférieure du classement des retraits au bâton en 2019, Mincey pourrait aider à abattre l’opposition dans les situations critiques.
• Juan Kelly (1B/3B): Qu’est-ce qu’il NE PEUT PAS faire? Il est un frappeur ambidextre qui frappe pour une bonne moyenne, de la puissance et joue aux deux coins du champ intérieur. Il a tout détruit en 2019 avec les Aigles et son OPS de .951. Étant originaire de la République dominicaine, le visa devra être traité avant la saison et cela aura peut-être effrayé certaines équipes et la raison pour laquelle il a été pris si tard dans le repêchage. S’il s’en sort, cependant, les Miners viennent de faire un gros coup!

Valleycats de Tri-City

• Brandt Broussard (Avant-champs / Voltigeur): le frappeur droitier de 25 ans peut jouer au milieu du terrain (principalement 2B / CF) et a un peu de vitesse. Il n’a pas affronté le calibre de la compétition de la Frontier League, mais c’est un choix intrigant pour la saison 2021.
• Zane Gelphman (Avant-champs / Voltigeur): Un autre frappeur droitier pour le gérant Pete Cavaglia. Il n’a pas non plus affronté le niveau de compétition de la FL, mais il a un bon potentiel de puissance au bâton et a atteint les buts près de 39% de ses apparitions au marbre depuis 2017.

Thunderbolts de Windy City

• Jack Strunc (Avant-champs): un peu préoccupé par ce choix, mais évidemment il y a peut-être un rôle pour lui qui m’est inconnu. Le droitier peut jouer au 2B / AC, donc c’est toujours une bonne chose, mais son bâton est un peu faible, d’autant plus que le baseball de la Frontier League sera le plus haut niveau de compétition auquel il aura été confronté.
• Zach Racusin (Voltigeur): un frappeur droitier de 27 ans qui apporte une capacité à entrer en contact avec le ballon et à atteindre les buts (.353 OBP en 6 saisons de collège et de baseball indépendant). Sa faiblesse est clairement un manque de puissance, il sera donc intéressant de voir combien de temps de jeu il obtiendra de son gérant.

Otters d’Evansville

• Jackie Urbaez (Avant-champs): un frappeur ambidextre de Miami qui a été libéré par les Milwaukee Brewers. Pas beaucoup d’informations sur lui, alors je me tourne vers ce qui a été écrit sur lui ce matin par l’équipe sur leur site officiel:

En seulement 57 matchs, Urbaez a eu 38 coups sûrs, dont dix pour plus d’un but, avec 24 points marqués, 23 points produits et 18 buts volées.

“Urbaez était l’un des joueurs disponibles que nous espérions vraiment obtenir, et heureusement, nous avions une bonne place au repêchage pour le sélectionner”, a déclaré le manager des Otters Andy McCauley.

Wild Things de Washington

• Andrew Penner (Avant-champs / Voltigeur): Un autre joueur qui a été l’une des principales raisons du succès des Rascals River City en 2019: .282/.366/.375. Il a vu une baisse de sa puissance en balle pro, mais a tout de même maintenu sa capacité à se mettre sur les buts et à mettre la balle en jeu tout en jouant à toutes les positions sauf 1B et receveur. C’est un joueur que vous voulez dans votre équipe! Les Wild Things ont ajouté beaucoup de talent ces derniers jours quand on considère également cet échange pour Kevin McNorton et Joe DeLuca.

Boomers de Schaumburg

• Chris Clare (Avant-champs): un batteur droitier qui est polyvalent et qui a joué avec l’organisation des Orioles de Baltimore pendant 4 saisons avant d’être libéré. Il n’était pas du tout dominant à l’attaque avec eux, mais je soupçonne un rebond dans la Frontier League quand on considère ses stats au collège. La ligue pourrait devenir un bon juste milieu pour lui et y trouver le succès.
• Tasker Strobel (LG): le joueur de 26 ans peut retirer des frappeurs sur des prises, mais il devra également limiter ses buts sur balles accordés. À 6'3', 190 lbs, le gaucher est un choix intéressant pour 2021. Il m’a dit, après le repêchage, qu’il était soulagé de pouvoir trouver une équipe où évoluer cette année.

Grizzlies de Gateway

• Cody Thompson (LD): Cody peut être dominant, mais aussi ne pas s’aider avec les buts sur balles qu’il permet. Il a offert une MPM de 4,97 en 2019 avec les Miners de South Illinois.
• Tanner Cable (LD): Ce sera sa 4e saison dans la Frontier League et il a un ÉNORME avantage hors de l’enclos des releveurs (10,6 K/9) depuis 2015…. mais les buts sur balles DOIVENT être restreints pour être vraiment une menace constante et avoir la confiance de son gérant dans les situations critiques. Il était également une arme pour les River City Rascals en 2019.

Boulders de New York

• Wilfred Salaman (LG): il a de l’expérience comme partant et releveur dans le système des Milwaukee Brewers, lançant sa balle rapide de 89 à 92 mph. Ses statistiques suggèrent un bras fiable qui peut manger des manches sans trop vous blesser.

Jackals du New Jersey

• Jason Zgardowski (LD): Un autre gros bras qui était avec River City en 2019: (2.39 ERA), 9.7 RAB/9 et 4.0 BB/9. Il a été dans les systèmes des Phillies et Cardinals. Il lance une balle rapide qui se maintient autour de 95 mph, une balle glissante et une balle tombante (splitter).
• Jack Weinberger (LD): un droitier de 6'5 qui a une expérience limitée du baseball professionnel et qui n’a pas été partant depuis 2017. Le gérant Brooks Carey pourrait avoir besoin de lui hors de l’enclos des releveurs en 2021.

Slammers de Joliet

• Keaton Sullivan (LD): Malheureusement, je n’ai rien trouvé sur Sullivan. Nous reviendrons vers lui au cours de la saison, croyez-moi.
